Farnham Resident Ted Milam Celebrates a milestone 50-year career at Farnham Castle

On Friday 23rd October 2020, Ted Milam, who is Facilities and Grounds Manager at Farnham Castle, celebrated an incredible 50 years of employment at this historic venue.

With recent statistics suggesting that employees now stay an average of only four and a half years in a job, those individuals offering loyalty, longevity and a passion for their work are an ever diminishing band, but Ted is definitely one of them.

Having joined Farnham Castle as a 16 year old apprentice, and working his way up to managing the full team of staff who maintain the historic Grade I and Grade II Listed Palace and Keep, Ted knows every inch of the property and grounds. Over the decades, Ted has not only cared for the Castle but has nurtured, trained and mentored many young maintenance and grounds staff, including offering opportunities to local youngsters with special educational needs. Ted has a true love for the Castle and has passed this on to many of his colleagues over the years.

Reflecting on his 50 years of service, Ted commented “when I started work here back in October 1970, little did I know that I would still be here 50 years later; but the Castle is a very special place and has an effect on everyone entering the buildings and grounds.  No two days are ever the same and there are always new challenges and opportunities for me and the team, as we strive to ensure that the Castle looks magnificent inside and out all year round”.

To celebrate his 50th anniversary, Ted was asked to plant one of his favourite trees in the Castle grounds, alongside a plaque to recognise his long service.

A spokesperson for Farnham Castle said “Ted has constantly impressed with his knowledge and experience. When it comes to Farnham Castle, he is definitely the man to rely on.  It is extremely rare to have an employee give so much time, dedication and loyalty throughout their career, and we, here at Farnham Castle, have been incredibly lucky to have Ted. We can’t thank him enough for his commitment, calm enthusiasm and good humour.  We look forward to seeing Ted continue to pass on his knowledge and expertise for many years to come.  On behalf of the entire team at Farnham Castle, we want to congratulate Ted on his incredible achievement and thank him for his dedication to this unique Surrey landmark.”
