American born Colin met Kate whilst she was studying abroad at the University of Illinois. The couple got to know each other well over 8 years and during a romantic holiday to Morocco, Colin popped the question. After 2-3 months of celebrating their engagement, Kate and Colin commenced their wedding planning journey and just 19 short months later, they celebrated a June wedding on a Friday at Farnham Castle in Surrey.

Visiting 10 Wedding Venues

The bride and groom-to-be browsed wedding venues on the popular wedding planning website hitched.co.uk before creating a short list of 10 to actually go and visit. Farnham Castle was the very first venue the couple were shown around, but no other venues compared to what the Surrey Castle had to offer. The couple loved the history of Farnham Castle, the pretty town, the gorgeous views, high ceilings, Great Hall and the fact that there were 33 guest bedrooms on-site for Colin’s international wedding guests. Kate and Colin were keen to get married in their family church and knew that they wanted to secure a Friday wedding date so that everyone could benefit from a full weekend of celebrating. They booked the church and confirmed Friday 28th June, 2019 with the wedding planning team at Farnham Castle.

Finding A Wedding Dress for a Castle Venue

Kate took finding her wedding dress very seriously! She tried on around 40 wedding dresses in 5 different shops, in hope of finding a dream gown to compliment her Castle wedding venue. She played around with several different styles, but her winning wedding dress was an A-line design by Sophia Tolli. The bride-to-be teamed her dress up with a glitzy headpiece by TillyThomasLux and a stylish pair of wedding shoes by Rainbow Club.

Kate had 4 bridesmaids; her twin sister Laura, two best friends, Faye and Louise, and Sarah, the friend who had originally introduced her to Colin. Kate loved the idea of her bridesmaids wearing ‘something blue’ and realised that David’s Bridal had a great selection to choose from, with the added benefit of having stores in both the UK and USA. The pale blue, floor length gowns featured ruffled details down the middle and looked sensational on the big day.

Fabulous Wedding Flowers

In keeping with the ‘something blue’ colour scheme, Kate and Colin chose to decorate Farnham Castle with a stunning selection of flowers, with designs created by ‘I Do’ Wedding Florist. The bridal bouquet featured gorgeous David Austin Roses, pale pink peonies, white roses and blue accent flowers. Low wedding reception table decorations were designed along the same scheme, but it was the chandelier in the Great Hall that gave this wedding the wow factor. The Chandelier was decorated with blue flowers that hung down amongst eucalyptus – the creation looked truly impressive.

Wedding Ceremony and Reception

Kate and her bridal party arrived at Farnham Castle early on 28th June, so that they could get ready in the comfort of the pretty Gatehouse. Colin calmed his nerves in the Guildford Suite and both bride and groom-to-be headed off to Holy Family Catholic Church in Farnham for their 1pm wedding ceremony. Kate walked down the aisle with her father to Bridal Chorus by Wagner and after being announced as husband and wife in front of 110 guests, the newlywed couple and their party travelled back to Farnham Castle in a statement Red London Bus – a lovely experience for Colin’s family and friends who had travelled over from America for the wedding.

Upon arrival at Farnham Castle, guests enjoyed the views of Farnham from the Great Lawn as they sipped celebratory fizz and enjoyed canapes prepared by the in-house kitchen team.  Kate and Colin spent time wandering the Castle grounds and historic Keep with their photographer while guests played a combination of British and American lawn games before being called in to the Great Hall for dinner. The Castle Keep, located just behind Farnham Castle is an idyllic spot for wedding photography and is also a lovely attraction for out-of-town visitors to see during their stay in Farnham.

Reception table decorations were kept low, so that the focus was on the beautifully decorated chandelier above. Charity pins were given to guests as favours and tables were named after Kate and Colin’s favourite pubs from London and across the pond. Farnham Castle’s specialist wedding chefs prepared a sumptuous three course menu for the wedding party.

Chosen Wedding Menu:

Starter: Chorizo and sausage meat scotch egg with tomato, fennel and paprika ragu and pork scratching.
Main Course: Pan seared marinated lamb rump and potato rosti with pea puree, mint salsa verde and rosemary jus.
Dessert: Sticky toffee pudding, hot butterscotch sauce and vanilla pod ice cream.

A further 15 evening guests joined the happy couple to witness the cutting of their four tier Wedding Cake, followed by dancing to a live band and DJ in the Great Hall throughout the night. After saying their goodbyes and spending a few extra moments with over night guests, Kate and Colin retired to The Guildford Suite to chat about the different elements of their perfect day. The following morning, guests gathered in the Library for breakfast with a view, before departing Farnham Castle with fond memories.

Kate and Colin went on a mini-moon to the Amalfi Coast in Italy right after the wedding, followed by an official 3 week honeymoon to New Zealand in early 2020.

Favourite Wedding Day Moments

Everyone says that a wedding day goes by in a flash, but there are some very special memories that really stand out. Colin’s top three wedding day moments were, seeing Kate in her wedding dress, spending a few moments alone throughout the day, and seeing all of their best friends come together to have a great time! Kate’s top moments were, finally saying ‘I do’, the amazing food created by Farnham Castle’s team of chefs, seeing all of their friends and family come together, and finally, being spun around on the dance floor by Colin during their first dance to ‘Say You Won’t Let Go’ by James Arthur.
